Selling Your Home First, Then Buying the Next One
Sell your home first so you know your budget, with a plan for where you'll live next.
Know your budget before you shop
Selling first is the cleanest way to know exactly what you have to spend on your next home. You're not guessing, and you're not carrying two homes at once.
I'm Omega Mejia, a real estate agent in Frisco, Texas. I plan the sale around your next move, so the dates work for you instead of against you.
What selling first asks of you
The trade-off is time. You may need a place to stay between homes, and you'll shop for your next home on a schedule. Here's how I help you build a cushion:
- Closing and possession dates. A buyer may agree to a later closing or give you time after the sale. I negotiate that as part of the whole deal.
- An early search. We set up your home search while your house is being prepared, so you already know what's out there.
- A fallback. A short-term place to stay or storage for your belongings is easier to arrange before you need it.
- An offer plan. When the right home appears, you can write that day with confidence.
How I sell your home
You see a Plan A, B and C for pricing before we list, with the recent sales behind each one. Every listing gets professional photos, a walkthrough video, its own website, an open house the first weekend, outreach to the neighbors and paid ads. See the whole selling process.
Is selling first right for you?
It depends on your numbers, your dates and how much room you have. Read how Frisco homeowners decide the order, or see how buying first works.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I sell my house before buying a new one?
It depends on what you would keep from the sale, what the next home costs to carry and how much room your timeline gives you. Selling first gives you certainty about your budget.
Where do I live between homes?
Plan for it before you list. Ask for the closing and possession dates you need and set up a fallback place to stay.
Can I shop for a home while mine is for sale?
Yes. Starting your search early means you know what is available and can write an offer quickly.
Who should I talk to about financing and taxes?
Talk with your lender about financing and your tax advisor about taxes. I point you to them instead of guessing.
