Moving From California to Texas
I made this move myself, and I can help you make it.
I made this move myself
I'm Omega Mejia, a real estate agent in Frisco, Texas, and I moved here from California. So when a California family tells me they're thinking about Texas, I don't have to guess at the questions. I've asked most of them myself.
I help California buyers choose a town, shop from far away, understand how buying works in Texas and line up the timing with the sale of their home back in California. See how I help every relocation buyer.

What can feel different in Texas
Every move teaches you something. These are the questions California buyers ask me most, and how I help you answer them for the exact home you're considering:
- Property taxes. The Texas Comptroller does not set property tax rates. Local taxing units set them, and local appraisal districts handle values. Rates and bills differ by address, so I help you look up the real numbers for any home before you make an offer.
- Income tax. Texas has no state personal income tax. How your move affects your own taxes is a question for your tax advisor, and I'm happy to work alongside them.
- Insurance. Homeowners insurance works differently from place to place. Get a quote on the specific home early so the monthly cost holds no surprises.
- Community charges. HOA dues and other community fees vary a lot. I help you read what's included before you fall in love with a home.
- The homes themselves. Home styles, lot sizes and ages differ from what you may be used to. I tell you plainly what I'd look for in each one.
How buying works in Texas
The steps may be in a different order than you're used to. After an accepted offer, the buyer delivers earnest money to a title company. An option period follows, usually 7 to 10 days, when you inspect the home and decide whether to move forward. Your lender orders an appraisal, and a title company handles closing. I explain each step before you sign anything. Read how I help buyers, step by step.
Shopping from California
You may not be able to visit often, so I make each visit count. I narrow the search first, set up showings around your trip and tour by video when you can't be here. I give you a clear read on every home, including what photos don't show. Before an offer, we sign a buyer representation agreement that spells out what I do and how I'm paid. Everything in it is negotiable.
Choosing a town
Collin County has several towns, and each one gives you something different: Frisco, McKinney, Plano, Prosper, Celina, Allen and more. I lay out the tradeoffs on home age, lots and commute so you can pick on facts. Many families also look at which school district serves each city, and you should confirm any address with the district.
Selling your California home
If you're selling a home in California, you'll want a local agent there who knows that market. I work with agents in other areas, so I can connect you with a trusted agent, and then we coordinate dates so both ends of the move line up. The choice of agent is always yours.

This page describes my general approach. It isn't legal, tax, insurance or lending advice. Check tax and financing questions with your tax advisor and lender.
